Croatian tourism minister resigns due to disputed land transaction

Croatia Tourism Minister Veljko Ostojic resigned on Saturday after media reported he was involved in a disputed land transaction, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

According to a government statement, Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic has accepted Ostojic’s resignation and proposed to nominate a new tourism minister.

Ostojic is the fourth minister to step down since the Croatian parliament voted for the Milanovic Cabinet 15 months ago.

Local media reported Ostojic was involved in the sale of an attractive price of land near the coastal resort of Rovinj.

In 2004, Ostojic’s family bought the land for 860,000 kuna (about 156,363 U.S. dollars) and shortly after the purchase the area was urbanised and the price of that plot jumped to 25.6 million kuna (about 4.7 million dollars).

Reports said at that time Ostojic was a member of the Istria County government and the purchase, urbanisation and sale he was involved in. The State Prosecutor’s Office was investigating the sale, the reports said.

Ostojic has denied the accusations, saying the reports were unfounded and untruth.
